The True North Standard

Why Homeowners Trust Us With Springs

A broken spring is the most common — and most dangerous — garage door failure. Springs counterbalance the entire weight of the door; when one lets go, the door becomes hundreds of pounds of dead weight that your opener was never designed to lift. True North Overhead Doors LTD replaces torsion and extension springs across Calgary, Strathmore and Central Alberta, usually the same day you call.

Alberta is hard on springs: -30°C cold snaps make steel brittle, chinook freeze-thaw cycles accelerate fatigue, and every open-close cycle brings the spring closer to its rated limit. We replace failed springs with properly sized, high-cycle replacements — and always inspect the cables, bearings and drums that a snapping spring puts under shock load.

  • Same-day replacement for most calls
  • Torsion and extension systems, all door sizes
  • Springs matched to your door's exact weight and track setup
  • High-cycle spring upgrades available
  • Cables, bearings and drums inspected with every job
  • Full balance test and safety check before we leave

Know the Signs

Signs Your Spring Has Failed (or Is About To)

Never try to force a door with a broken spring — and never attempt DIY spring work. Springs are under extreme tension and are dangerous when mishandled. Call us if you notice:

  • A loud bang from the garage — the classic sound of a spring letting go
  • A visible gap in the coil above the door
  • The door feels extremely heavy or only opens a few inches
  • The opener strains, or the door rises crooked
  • Stretched, gapped or corroded coils on an older spring
  • The door slams down faster than it should

What to Expect

Our Safe Spring Replacement Process

  1. Inspection & measurement

We confirm the failure, measure the door and existing springs, and check the whole counterbalance system.

  2. Up-front quote

Typical spring replacements run $150–$350. You approve the price before we start.

  3. Safe removal

The damaged spring is safely unloaded and removed with proper winding bars and procedure — the part you should never DIY.

  4. Quality replacement

We install correctly sized, quality springs — matched pairs on double doors, so both sides wear evenly.

  5. Tension, balance & test

Tension is set to your door's weight, then the door is balance-tested and cycled to confirm smooth, safe operation.

"I had a great experience with True North Overhead Doors. They were budget-friendly, honest, and provided excellent service. Instead of trying to sell me a new garage door, they repaired my old garage door and had it working perfectly the very same day. Kevin is so professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain the issue and the repair process. The work was completed quickly, and the price was very reasonable."

Common Questions

Broken Spring Replacement FAQs

Typical spring replacement runs $150–$350 depending on the spring type and door size — that's our posted range, quoted exactly up front before work begins.

If your door runs two springs, we recommend replacing both. They were installed together and have the same wear — when one breaks, the other is close behind, and mismatched springs unbalance the door. Replacing both in one visit saves a second service call.

Please don't. Torsion springs store enormous energy and cause serious injuries every year when unloaded incorrectly. Professional replacement is fast and affordable — it's not the place to save a service call.

Standard springs are rated around 10,000 cycles — roughly 7–10 years of average use. Alberta's temperature swings can shorten that. If you use the door as your front door, ask us about high-cycle springs rated for 25,000+ cycles.
